Kimberly Herslow, a trainer and rider based out of her Upper Creek Farm in Stockton, NJ, had an impressive show season in South Florida this year with Rosmarin, an 8-year-old Hanoverian gelding nicknamed Reno. Their strong results culminated in standout performances at the Wellington Nations Cup CDIO3*, where they won the Prix St. Georges and led Team USA I to a gold-medal finish.

I am so happy with our outcome of our season in South Florida. I knew we had a very good chance of doing well and my expectations for me and my horse were very high before I came.

After the results from the Devon Horse show in 2012, our first CDI competition at the Prix St. Georges level, I knew that we just needed to find the best trainer to help us progress with the same system I have established with my horse up through the levels at home. Lars Petersen was a great fit for us both and understands the importance of throughness and connection in our everyday work.

A season highlight for me was the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W, our second show of the season. We won the Prix St. Georges and Freestyle classes and took second in the Intermediaire I. At that point, I knew we were ready to bring our ‘A Game’ to the show ring, as we had fewer mistakes and better focus.

Our first show, at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, was tough. We had many distractions, since we were able to see through the bleachers into the warm-up ring. This made Reno's focus scattered and affected many of our double co-efficient scores. We were also a little rusty from not showing since Devon, and it was our second PSG and first I1 in the show ring.

We returned to Global for the Wellington Nations Cup CDIO3*, where we represented the U.S. I was so honored to have been chosen for USA’s Team 1. Our best season highlight was earning the high score of the day on Friday, the team competition day, and winning the Nations Cup PSG. What an amazing feeling! To have that happen right before we headed back home to New Jersey was incredible.

It was also an amazing experience having others to cheer on when usually it is such an independent sport. It was great to feel the support from my teammates cheering me on from the rail. I liked the format as well: having two small tour and two Grand Prix horses made it more interesting. Jenny Van Wieren from the USEF was a great Chef d’Équipe and Lars was there to coach me, so I had the best of all worlds.

I am so excited with our finish at Nations Cup, and I know there is so much more expression there as Reno gains strength and confidence. I think it was very beneficial for us to prove we can handle the stress of a big show that included competition from 10 nations. It was the biggest highlight of our career so far. I’m extremely proud of Reno, and all my hard work is paying off!

Kim’s next column will discuss her history with Reno, including how she found him and what her training process and challenges have been with him. Follow her progress at www.uppercreekfarm.com and www.facebook.com/pages/Upper-Creek-Farm/333019812076.
